The question

What thinking sits behind your benefits?

Many organisations can say exactly what they offer, but far less easily why they chose it.

As a result, benefits quickly become a set of separate schemes, and new choices are driven mainly by what employees ask for or what other employers do.

A Benefits Philosophy turns that around. We first determine what you stand for as an employer and what role benefits play in that. From that basis, much more deliberate choices can follow.

When is a Benefits Philosophy right for you?

In need of a clear foundation?

Coherence is missing

You offer plenty of benefits, but an overarching idea is missing.

Choices are hard to explain

It is not always clear why certain benefits are or are not offered.

The organisation is changing

Strategy, culture or workforce is developing and benefits policy has to grow with it.

Lots of new ideas

Requests and new benefits come up regularly, but there is no framework to test them against.

Using benefits more strategically

You want a stronger connection between benefits, culture and employer brand.

Not sure where to start?

In a short call we look at which approach fits your organisation.

Our approach

From organisational identity to Benefits Philosophy

  1. 01

    Organisation & context

    We dive into your strategy, mission, vision, culture, employees and current benefits.

  2. 02

    Strategic principles

    Together we explore which principles should be central. Think of freedom, security, equality, choice, development or personal responsibility.

  3. 03

    Benefits Philosophy

    We translate the chosen principles into a clear, recognisable philosophy describing what you stand for and what role benefits play in it.

  4. 04

    Translation into benefits

    We make concrete what the philosophy means for the current and future benefits package and how new choices can be tested against it.

Result

A philosophy that gives direction

Afterwards you have a clear Benefits Philosophy that can serve as the foundation for your benefits policy.

No longer isolated benefits decisions, but a clear idea that gives direction to the whole package.

Clear principles and starting points

A connection with strategy, culture and employer brand

A framework to test existing and new benefits against

A stronger story towards employees and other stakeholders

Process & timeline

Developed together, not thought up for you

A Benefits Philosophy has to genuinely belong to the organisation. That is why we always develop it together with the key stakeholders. Beforehand we determine who is involved and which existing information is relevant. We then work towards the final philosophy through analysis and one or more working sessions.

1-2months indicative timeline

The exact timeline depends on the number of stakeholders involved, the depth you want and how quickly input and feedback are given.

Do you have a specific deadline? Then we agree up front on what is feasible.

Indicative investment

What does a Benefits Philosophy cost?

The investment depends on the size of the organisation, the number of stakeholders involved and the depth you want. Up front we agree clearly on how we set up the project and what we deliver.

Frequently asked questions about Benefits Philosophy

A Benefits Philosophy describes the principles behind your benefits. It answers questions like: what do we want to stand for as an employer, what role do benefits play in that, and on what basis do we make future choices?

No. An EVP describes more broadly what you have to offer as an employer and why someone would want to work for the organisation. A Benefits Philosophy focuses specifically on the principles and choices behind benefits policy. The two can of course reinforce each other.

No. The philosophy forms the basis underneath the policy. It describes the principles choices are based on, while policy and individual schemes set out more concretely how benefits are arranged.

Not necessarily. We do want enough insight into the current package to understand which choices are being made today and how they relate to the desired philosophy.

That is possible. Depending on the organisation, employees, management, HR and other stakeholders can be involved. Beforehand we decide together which perspectives are needed to arrive at a philosophy that genuinely fits the organisation.

The philosophy can be used as a framework to test existing and new benefits against. It also helps with optimisation projects, decision-making and communication towards employees.

Yes. We can translate the Benefits Philosophy to the existing benefits package and show where schemes align well and where there may be tension or room for optimisation.

Yes. If the Benefits Philosophy shows that parts of the package no longer fit, we can support the further optimisation and implementation. Depending on the scale, the Primary Approach can be a logical follow-up.

Total Benefits is the first Employee Benefits Intelligence Platform in the Netherlands. It helps organisations centralise, benchmark, manage and continuously optimise their employee benefits.

Unlike traditional HR software, Total Benefits is not focused on HR administration or payroll processing. Instead, it is designed to collect, enrich and apply knowledge, benchmark insights and practical expertise related to employee benefits.

At the core of the platform is Benefits Intelligence: the collection, enrichment and application of knowledge, benchmark information, market insights and technology related to employee benefits. This enables organisations to make better-informed decisions about their benefits strategy.

Within the platform you can combine, among other things:

  • the Benefits Database, containing more than 200 fully developed employee benefits, organised across 12 benefit themes;
  • benchmark information and practical market insights;
  • governance and compliance support;
  • optimisation workflows;
  • communication and implementation tools;
  • AI-powered support through the Benefits Assistant.

Total Benefits is not a one-time assessment or a standalone software tool. It is an intelligence platform that supports organisations in building, managing and continuously improving their employee benefits strategy.

As organisations continue to use the platform, they gain increasing insight into:

  • how their benefits compare with the market;
  • which benefits are most relevant to their workforce;
  • where optimisation opportunities exist;
  • which trends and developments are shaping the future of employee benefits.

The goal: helping organisations move from fragmented employee benefits towards better-informed decision-making and a future-proof benefits strategy.

The name Total Benefits is inspired by the well-known HR concept of Total Rewards: the complete value an employer offers employees, including compensation, benefits, development opportunities, company culture and the overall employee experience.

Since our platform focuses specifically on everything beyond base salary, we chose the name Total Benefits.

Within the platform, employee benefits are organised into 12 core benefit themes, including wellbeing, mobility, flexibility, sustainable employability and meaningful work. This creates greater structure, consistency and visibility across the entire employee benefits package.

Built on this central knowledge layer, organisations can not only manage their employee benefits, but also benchmark, optimise and make better-informed decisions for the future.

Benefits Intelligence is the process of collecting, enriching and applying knowledge, data and market insights related to employee benefits.

By combining consultancy expertise, benchmark information, practical market insights and technology, Total Benefits enables organisations to make better-informed decisions about their employee benefits strategy.

Benefits Intelligence forms the foundation of every capability within Total Benefits — from the Benefits Database and benchmark insights to governance, AI-powered assistance and future platform innovations.
