The people behind Not Secondary

Behind Not Secondary and Total Benefits is a team that focuses entirely on employee benefits. Every day, we help organisations to make their benefits transparent, to optimise them, communicate them and keep them future-proof. That way, we support employers in making better-informed choices about their benefits policy.

Since 2020

Our story

Not Secondary started in 2020, just before the COVID-19 crisis. A remarkable time in which much changed, not only how we worked, but also how we viewed benefits.

We started with a fresh perspective and a clear mission: to raise the bar for benefits in the Netherlands. We did this through projects focused on the optimisation and communication of secondary benefits. Ideally both at the same time.

Our name says it all. Not Secondary is a deliberate choice. We believe that secondary benefits are anything but secondary. They touch on what people truly value in their work, think health, flexibility, development and work-life balance. These are the things that determine whether someone stays, grows and feels connected. They therefore deserve not only attention, but also direction.

Along the way, other HR challenges regularly crossed our path, but we always stayed true to our focus. And that turned out to be the right choice. By now, we have had the privilege of working for organisations such as Van Lanschot Kempen, Achmea, Capgemini, Albron, Zinkunie, Vrumona and many others. With or without a collective labour agreement, large or small, corporate or SME, we have seen it all.

From the very beginning, we gathered the knowledge, experiences and insights gained from our projects. Over the years, this gave rise to a unique source of information on benefits, market developments and the challenges employers face.

In 2025, we translated these insights into the development of our own platform, in close collaboration with existing clients. The result is Total Benefits: an benefits intelligence platform that helps organisations to centrally record, benchmark, manage and further develop their benefits.

Total Benefits is built on five years of consultancy experience and is continuously enriched with insights from ongoing projects. This allows the platform to grow in step with employers' challenges and developments within the benefits landscape.

With the introduction of Total Benefits, we have combined the best of both worlds since 1 January 2026: specialist consultancy and benefits intelligence. In doing so, we bring together knowledge, benchmark information, technology and practical experience in one integrated approach to secondary benefits.

Because ultimately, we believe that great benefits do not happen by chance. They are the result of insight, direction and the willingness to keep improving.

Why we exist

Why we do what we do

We believe that for many organisations, secondary benefits are still needlessly complex. Information is fragmented, schemes grow organically and employers lack the overview they need to make well-founded choices.

That is why we combine consultancy, technology and hands-on experience in one team. We not only advise organisations, we also make sure changes are actually implemented and safeguarded. That combination means insights from practice are translated directly into new services and the further development of Total Benefits.

Total Benefits is the first Employee Benefits Intelligence Platform in the Netherlands. It helps organisations centralise, benchmark, manage and continuously optimise their employee benefits.

Unlike traditional HR software, Total Benefits is not focused on HR administration or payroll processing. Instead, it is designed to collect, enrich and apply knowledge, benchmark insights and practical expertise related to employee benefits.

At the core of the platform is Benefits Intelligence: the collection, enrichment and application of knowledge, benchmark information, market insights and technology related to employee benefits. This enables organisations to make better-informed decisions about their benefits strategy.

Within the platform you can combine, among other things:

  • the Benefits Database, containing more than 200 fully developed employee benefits, organised across 12 benefit themes;
  • benchmark information and practical market insights;
  • governance and compliance support;
  • optimisation workflows;
  • communication and implementation tools;
  • AI-powered support through the Benefits Assistant.

Total Benefits is not a one-time assessment or a standalone software tool. It is an intelligence platform that supports organisations in building, managing and continuously improving their employee benefits strategy.

As organisations continue to use the platform, they gain increasing insight into:

  • how their benefits compare with the market;
  • which benefits are most relevant to their workforce;
  • where optimisation opportunities exist;
  • which trends and developments are shaping the future of employee benefits.

The goal: helping organisations move from fragmented employee benefits towards better-informed decision-making and a future-proof benefits strategy.

The name Total Benefits is inspired by the well-known HR concept of Total Rewards: the complete value an employer offers employees, including compensation, benefits, development opportunities, company culture and the overall employee experience.

Since our platform focuses specifically on everything beyond base salary, we chose the name Total Benefits.

Within the platform, employee benefits are organised into 12 core benefit themes, including wellbeing, mobility, flexibility, sustainable employability and meaningful work. This creates greater structure, consistency and visibility across the entire employee benefits package.

Built on this central knowledge layer, organisations can not only manage their employee benefits, but also benchmark, optimise and make better-informed decisions for the future.

Benefits Intelligence is the process of collecting, enriching and applying knowledge, data and market insights related to employee benefits.

By combining consultancy expertise, benchmark information, practical market insights and technology, Total Benefits enables organisations to make better-informed decisions about their employee benefits strategy.

Benefits Intelligence forms the foundation of every capability within Total Benefits — from the Benefits Database and benchmark insights to governance, AI-powered assistance and future platform innovations.
