More freedom of choice within benefits

Scheuten Glas has been developing high-quality glass solutions for the international construction sector for over 75 years. With innovative applications in areas such as insulation, safety and solar shading, the organisation contributes to landmark building projects around the world.

To give employees greater freedom of choice and to improve communication around benefits, Scheuten wanted to further develop its existing benefits package. With a comprehensive employee handbook and a growing demand from the works council, the need arose to present benefits in a clearer, more attractive and future-proof way.

More freedom of choice within benefits
Together with Not Secondary, we have achieved a number of clear and tangible results. The possibilities for setting up flexible benefits can sometimes seem almost endless, but together with Paul we have made those possibilities increasingly concrete at every step. Our new Flex & Fit scheme has something appealing for everyone. Combined with the Total Benefits statement, which we primarily use to explain benefits to job applicants, we have taken a great step forward in becoming, and remaining, an attractive employer.

Challenge: Within Scheuten, both employees and the works council expressed a desire for greater flexibility in the benefits package.

Questions regularly arose, particularly around mobility, vitality, and freedom of choice. At the same time, Scheuten wanted to avoid immediately introducing a fully individualised choice budget, as this did not align well with the existing benefits structure and available tax capacity.

In addition, the benefits were spread across multiple documents, including the collective labour agreement and an extensive employee handbook. This made it difficult for employees to get a clear overview of all the arrangements available to them.

The challenge therefore consisted of two parts: creating greater flexibility within the benefits package and improving the communication of benefits.

Approach & advice:The process began with an inventory of the existing benefits and a brief Benefits Scan of the current package. This involved examining the current situation, the wishes of the works council, and potential opportunities to further develop the package.

We then facilitated an interactive working group in which representatives from the works council and the organisation jointly explored which forms of flexibilisation would best suit Scheuten and its employees.

These sessions ultimately gave rise to the newFlex & Fit scheme, an arrangement that offers employees greater freedom of choice across a number of key themes:

  • buying and selling holiday hours;
  • a lease bicycle through Hellorider;
  • a vitality budget.

The scheme gives employees more control over their benefits, while allowing the organisation to maintain oversight of the package's manageability and feasibility.

Alongside the substantive development, we took care of all Communication surrounding the scheme. The Flex & Fit scheme was given its own visual identity within Scheuten's corporate branding and was subsequently integrated into a new Benefits Statement.

This brought together all benefits from the collective labour agreement, the employee handbook, and the new Flex & Fit scheme into a single, clearly structured document, giving employees one central place to gain insight into their complete benefits package.

To ensure the package can be effectively managed, optimised, and benchmarked going forward, Scheuten subsequently chose to implement our benefits intelligence platform Total Benefits.

Result: The result is a benefits package that better reflects the wishes of employees while remaining manageable for the organisation.

With the introduction of Flex & Fit, Scheuten now has a modern scheme that offers employees greater freedom of choice in the areas of leave, mobility, and vitality, without the complexity of a fully individualised choice budget.

In addition, all benefits have been brought together in a Benefits Statement that fully aligns with Scheuten's refreshed brand identity. As a result, employees have gained greater insight into their benefits and the value of the total package.

By combining Optimisation, Communication, and technology, Scheuten now has a future-proof foundation for further developing, managing, and making benefits visible to employees.

Total Benefits is the first Employee Benefits Intelligence Platform in the Netherlands. It helps organisations centralise, benchmark, manage and continuously optimise their employee benefits.

Unlike traditional HR software, Total Benefits is not focused on HR administration or payroll processing. Instead, it is designed to collect, enrich and apply knowledge, benchmark insights and practical expertise related to employee benefits.

At the core of the platform is Benefits Intelligence: the collection, enrichment and application of knowledge, benchmark information, market insights and technology related to employee benefits. This enables organisations to make better-informed decisions about their benefits strategy.

Within the platform you can combine, among other things:

  • the Benefits Database, containing more than 200 fully developed employee benefits, organised across 12 benefit themes;
  • benchmark information and practical market insights;
  • governance and compliance support;
  • optimisation workflows;
  • communication and implementation tools;
  • AI-powered support through the Benefits Assistant.

Total Benefits is not a one-time assessment or a standalone software tool. It is an intelligence platform that supports organisations in building, managing and continuously improving their employee benefits strategy.

As organisations continue to use the platform, they gain increasing insight into:

  • how their benefits compare with the market;
  • which benefits are most relevant to their workforce;
  • where optimisation opportunities exist;
  • which trends and developments are shaping the future of employee benefits.

The goal: helping organisations move from fragmented employee benefits towards better-informed decision-making and a future-proof benefits strategy.

The name Total Benefits is inspired by the well-known HR concept of Total Rewards: the complete value an employer offers employees, including compensation, benefits, development opportunities, company culture and the overall employee experience.

Since our platform focuses specifically on everything beyond base salary, we chose the name Total Benefits.

Within the platform, employee benefits are organised into 12 core benefit themes, including wellbeing, mobility, flexibility, sustainable employability and meaningful work. This creates greater structure, consistency and visibility across the entire employee benefits package.

Built on this central knowledge layer, organisations can not only manage their employee benefits, but also benchmark, optimise and make better-informed decisions for the future.

Benefits Intelligence is the process of collecting, enriching and applying knowledge, data and market insights related to employee benefits.
